The Kinetograph was a motion picture camera that was commissioned by Thomas Edison and invented by William Dickson. The camera built on the work of Marey using his idea to make a camera that took multiple successive images in a short amount of time that when projected at a high speed would create the illusion of movement. The camera also built on Marey's design as it used the newly invented celluloid film to expose the image onto which allowed for easier projecting.

The Kinetograph was important as it was one of the first purpose built motion picture cameras that was readily to film makers (as Prince's single lens camera went missing along with him so was never duplicated and distributed)
