After the defeat of cold harbour the Union army crossed the James River and attacked the outskirts of Petersburg, an important junction of the southern railroad. After four days of bloodshed Grant realised the only way to win this battle was to isolate Petersburg and stop all supplies, slowly starving the people in the city.
