When the Nazis are made to liquidate the Srodula ghetto, Vladek, Anja and her relatives are taken to "ghetto inside ghetto" - a detention area in Srodula. Here Vladek's cousins Jakor and Haskel helped Vladek, Anja and Lolek to escape. However "On Wednesday the vans came", and Anja's parents were sent to Auschwitz. It was too risky for Jakor and Haskel to help them escape too, as they were too old. Afterwards, Haskel helped Vladek get work.
