4 Dez 1979 Jahr - Soviets invade Afghanistan

Beschreibung:

In 1978, President Daud Khan was overthrown by left-wing military officers led by Nur Mohammed Taraki. This new government would be consisted of the People's Party and the Banner Party, two Marxist-Leninist groups, which forged close ties with the Soviet Union in the process. By the end of these political changes, a new central party arose, the People's Democratic Party.

Through this newfound coalition, purges were conducted upon domestic opposition and widespread land reforms took place, only to be resented by devout Muslims and hardline anti-Communists.

With this resentment, uprisings against the government took place, prompting a Soviet invasion of the country to 'restore order.' Over time, this war grew to become a stalemate, with Soviets making advancements, only be combatted by guerrilla warfare on the account of the mujahideen (Islam Afghan fighters.)

To take it up a notch, Soviets then introduced bombing into much of Afghanistan, which caused widespread flea and asylum by civilians, in nearby states such as Pakistan and Iran. They would stand their ground however, neutralising air threats through antiaircraft missiles supplied by the States.

This effort quelled much of the conflict in the Afghanistan War, proving a Soviet Union with diminishing influence. By 1988 the Soviet Union signed an accord, withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan.
