Jesus taught devotion to God and taught that "the kingdom of God is at hand. While "the kingdom of God" most likely referred to heaven, the Roman empire took it as a threat of rebellion and crucified him. This just strengthened his following, however, and cemented the cross as a traditional symbol of Christianity. Over the next several centuries, Christianity grew as different variations of it emerged, it became more centralized, and eventually became the religion of the Roman empire. (2.1)
