In 2011, Ward moved back to DeLisle, Mississippi in order to begin working on "Men We Reaped". She wanted to feel connected to her brother and the other men whose deaths she would begin writing about, and she desired to be surrounded by the close family and community with which she grew up. She also wanted to raise her children in DeLisle because it gave her a "feeling of belonging" (Block). Ward says "[it] gives me a sense of myself that is hard for me to access when I'm not here. A way of understanding myself: who I am, and where I come from, and who I come from" (Block). Moving back to DeLisle also scared her because she worries, "Am I gonna be able to raise my children to adulthood? Are they gonna live to be adults, to be as old as I am now, in this climate, in this country?" (Block).
