Emperor Leo III, an iconoclast, had the icon of Christ removed from the Chalke gate outside of the imperial palace in Constantinople. Leo felt that the successes of the Islamic forces were due to their aniconic practices, and that Byzantium was being punished for its idolatrous use of images.
