The Academy Awards, introduced by Louis. B Mayer, was used as a way to to unite and reward the five branches of the film industry, including actors, directors, producers, technicians, and writers.

THE WINNERS:
Best Directing. 7th Heaven (1927), Frank Borzage, winner for Dramatic Picture.

Best Directing. Two Arabian Knights (1927), Lewis Milestone, winner for Comedy Picture.

Best Picture. Wings (1927). This was the first Oscar winner for Best Picture.
