Upon the death of Oliver Cromwell and the forced retirement of his son Richard as Lord Protector, without someone to take on the role, Parliament wanted to reinstate Charles I's son to bring back the monarchy.

This led to the beginnings of the restoration, which would go on to form a system of constitutional monarchy.
