The French National Assembly didn't actually meet on June 17, 1789. It was actually created during a meeting with all three estates when Emmanuel-Joseph Sieyes suggested through a dramatic speech that the third estate delegates name themselves the National Assembly and that they should pass laws and reforms for the good of the people of France. The delegates in each estate voted and the National Assembly was in favor and created. This marked the end of the absolute monarchy of France and the beginning of the representative government. Their first meeting was three days later but the delegates of the third estate found that they were locked out of the meeting and instead broke down the door to an indoor tennis court and in a very similar fashion to creation of the American Constitution, decided not to leave the court until a new Constitution was created.
