During the Reign of Terror Maximilien Robespierre slowly gained power. Him and his supporters hoped to build a "republic of virtue" by wiping out every last trace of France's past. In doing this he changed the calendar and thinks like that but also decided to execute everyone who was against the revolution. He had them tried for treason in the morning and executed in the afternoon.
