14 Okt 1962 Jahr - Cuban Missile Crisis

Beschreibung:

Following the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961, Fidel Castro seeked helped from Nikita Khrushchev, Soviet leader, for assistance. This assistance would come in the form of nuclear weapons, secretly supplying missiles to Cuba. These missiles would serve two purposes, one being to counteract the American aggression towards the newly installed Communist government of Cuba, and the other to counteract nuclear missiles placed by the US in Italy and Turkey, neighbouring European nations to the USSR. All of which would cause an intense 12 day conflict, filled with nuclear derived tensions.

This conflict would have many consequences, for in the end, whilst the initially planned full scale invasion on Cuba was not launched by the US, the interception of shipments to the USSR would still have many repercussions.

Negotiations between Kennedy and Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin resulted in the removal of nuclear missiles in Turkey, Italy and Cuba. Furthermore, the US agreed not to attack Cuba.

The withdrawal of missiles in Cuba by Khrushchev was seen as a betrayal by Fidel Castro, making relations more fragile between the two Communist states. Furthermore, the same can be said for Western Allies, as members of NATO were somewhat vexed by the fact that Kennedy had kept much of them in the dark, with the negotiations which almost caused the Cold War to result in Nuclear warfare.

In the USSR, hardline Communists were angered with Khrushchev, where in two years time Leonid Brezhnev would be appointed into power, emphasising the need for a rapid build up in weapons.
