Luis and August Lumiere, with their father invented the cinematograph. It was first demonstrated at a scientific meeting in March 1895. Because it was hand-cranked it could be run anywhere, which goes hand in hand with the light-weight portability of the cinematograph, unlike the kinetoscope that used an electric light bulb. This invention was extremely innovative as it improved upon the original invention for moving image, the kinetoscope. Unlike the kinetoscope it was smaller and portable. It projected the image of the film allowing public viewings, achieved without using a peep-hole but a projection, unlike the kinetoscope.
The cinematograph quickly became a success. This was seized by the Lumiere brothers who established agencies in many countries.
Run by hand, the film would be transported through the cinematograph by two pins and sprocket holes punched into the celluloid film strip. The film would run through the machine and project an enlarged version of it, allowing public viewings of the film.
