James Cook was born in Yorkshire, England where at 18 he became a sailor and studied mathematics and navigation. After joining the British Royal Navy in 1755, he quickly rose through the ranks and became captain of a ship at 29. He took part in many battles during the French and Indian War. He quickly became famous as a scientific observer when he charted the coasts of Newfoundland and observed a solar eclipse on one of his voyages. On 1768, the Royal Society of London enlisted Cook to command expeditions in the Pacific ocean. Cook was the first to chart many Islands like New Zealand, Austrailia and Hawaii. Hoping to discover another Southern continent Cook was the first to reach the Antarctic circle but had never reached Antarctica. He later died after a skirmish with Native Hawaiians.
