Born in St-Malo, France. On his first voyages, Cartier sailed around Newfoundland and charted its nearby rivers. On 1535 he set out with three ships to explore the rivers of St. Lawerance and the Ottawa. He set out on many more voyages and set up an unsuccessful colony near Quebec. He later died at St-malo in 1557.
