In May 1996, a company named FutureWave Software released a program called FutureSplash Animator, which is the first name for Adobe Animate. The program included basic editing tools and a timeline at the time, with more animating features being added over time. Acquired by Macromedia soon after, it was renamed Macromedia Flash. The program was improved drastically under this new name before Macromedia was purchased by Adobe in 2005. The program was called Adobe Flash until 2015, where it was renamed Adobe Animate to better reflect the use of the program.
