• Facts
o The infectious agent is found from bat droppings from the habitat of their caves because they are capable flight. Common animals to transmit rabies in the United States are bats, stray dogs, foxes, coyotes, skunks, and raccoons.
o Developing countries are more at risk

o Behaviors that put a person at risk for getting the disease are traveling/living in developing countries such as Africa and Southeast Asia.
o Activities that have the involvement of having contact with wild animals. Such as exploring homes of bats(caves) or going camping.
o Working in a lab that involves the virus
o Having wounds to the neck or head quickly help the rabies virus spread to the brain.

• Symptoms/Treatment
o Symptoms of rabies include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, agitation, anxiety, confusion, hyperactivity, difficulty swallowing, excessive salivation, hallucinations, insomnia, and partial paralysis. Symptoms apply to all who are infected.
o Going to a doctor or medical care after exposure to rabies to get vaccinated with Rabies immune globulins which contains antibodies from blood donors.
o 3 current vaccines: Human diploid cell vaccine, Michigan Biologic Products Institute, and Inactivated diploid origin
