The war began when a band of the Nez Perce tribe refused to give up their ancestral lands and would not move into a reservation that was set up for them. The war took place in the 1877 from June to October. After the Native American tribes refused to move into the reservation, they sought help from other tribes and were in retreat the whole war and eventually had to surrender to the United States of America. Once the small band of tribes surrendered in the state of Montana, the Native Americans were taken prisoner, including the women and children. Instead of being sent to the reservation that the tribes were planned to go to, they were send on a train to the state of Kansas instead.
