The European Union banned superfood labels on food products unless they can be backed up by an authorized health claim that explains to the consumer why the product is especially good for their health. This is significant because it shows that many of the products labelled as superfoods are only labelled as such for marketing purposes and many of the claims have no scientific backing. It was also the first and only major step taken to prevent the term superfood as being used just for marketing on foods that have no specail nutrient concentration.
