When I was hired as a daycare teacher, my love of reading began to redevelop with the assistance of picture books. I began in the daycare as a supply teacher. In many of the classrooms, the teachers would ask me to read books while the other teacher set up lunch or organized the cots for nap time. In this role, I had to learn classroom management techniques very quickly. I soon found that by reading the book with animation and excitement, the students payed attention quite well. My favourite books to read became Robert Munsch, as I loved to d the sound effects with my students.
This experience revealed that even if you choose the right book, it can still be read in a boring way. I learned how to capture students’ attention with different voices and volumes, which I will transfer to the read-alouds in my classroom. Reading at the daycare helped to bring back my love of reading.
