During 1997 DVD's began to be introduced, very quickly taking over the market from videotape. Primarily because it could screen a sharper, higher clarity film with added space for movie extras. The first DVD player was retailed at £800.

This changed the film industry as it took over how most people viewed film and TV shows from videotape, it also meant that the films people purchased lasted longer as DVD's do not show age after being played each time like film and tape did.
