July 1st 1997 marked the end of the 99 year lease for Hong Kong Island given to the British. An agreement was reached between the two countries: Hong Kong would be given back to China but its 'unique free enterprising economy' would be maintained until 50 years later. Hong Kong became a Special Administrative Region (SAR) under the slogan 'One country, two systems'.
