"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."



The 13th amendment was passed by congress on January 31st, 1865 and ratified on December 6th, 1865. It was the first of three amendments ratified during the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War. It abolished slavery in the United States. It served as the end all be all to slavery after the Emancipation Proclamation failed to do so two years prior.
