John Maynard Keynes was a British economist that lived through both World Wars and the Great Depression and so had plenty experience with both the failings of the economy and humanity as a whole. His most influential work was The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money and in it he expresses his ideas about what role the government plays in economics, mainly in helping stabilize recessions and inflations that were inherent in capitalism and that, without a state actor, would create constant and predictable bubbles and crashes that would create an unstable market.
