George Melies built his own camera, as the Lumiere brothers wouldn't sell theirs to him. Melies evolved film using time lapse photography, 360 video, virtual reality, special effects. narratives, elaborate sets/costumes and camera tricks. He had learnt these tricks from his previous career as a magician. He adapted fairytales like Cinderella in 1899 as well as filming his own films with crazy ideas such as A trip to the moon in 1902. His movies were very significant because he was the first filmmaker to give real narratives as well as presenting the magic of film. He has gone down in history as a one of the most famous filmmakers, inspiring many other filmmakers. Melies made over 500 films during his time often, starring, financing, designing, photographing as well directing in all of them. His significance is shown in the 21st century film "Hugo" which tells parts of the story of his life.
