Before now, it was thought that an atom was only made up of electrons and protons. That was until James Chadwick theorized the neutron after experimenting with the beryllium atom and a new radiation was produced. He studied the radiation and found it had a neutral charge, yet about equal mass as the proton. Soon after, this particle was called the neutron.
