JJ Thompson discovered the
electron by experimenting with
applying high voltages to low-pressure
gases. He used beams of particles
that were attracted to positive
charges. This meant that they
had to be negatively charge.
These were named electrons.
The Dalton model that stated
that atoms could not be split
were revised, instead saying that
negative particles were embedded in
a cloud of positive charge.
