Henri Dutrochet named and discovered osmosis and constructed a osmometer to measure osmotic pressure. He was the first to recognize the importance of carbon dioxide use in the green pigment of plant cells and the effect of light on plants. He recognized the role of diffusion through semipermeable membranes.
