Pope Urban II declared the first crusade with the objective of reclaiming the birthplace of Christianity, Jerusalem. The city of Jerusalem was in the possession of the Muslim Seljuk Turks at the time. Another, almost more important objective was to assist Byzantium in the military defense of two of their cities (Nicaea and Antioch).
