The gravure was invented by Karel Klíč in 1890, the way gravure works is like the complete opposite to relief printing, as it relies on depressions and recesses on the surface of the printing plate. The printer creates the image by either cutting the plate by hand or even by using acid or other strong chemicals in order to etch the plate along the lines of the image you wish to print. The printer then layers the plate with ink which causes the ink to sink into the depressions so that when you put paper on and apply pressure, the different depths of ink will add different shades and give off different effects
