In exchange for Germany giving up its rights to Zanzibar, the United Kingdom transfers the Heligoland archipelago to Germany.

While the primary terms of the treaty related to Heligoland and Zanzibar, other standing disputes were settled in the treaty. These included;

1. settling the borders between German Togoland and the British Gold Coast, as well as between German Kamerun and British Nigeria.

2. Granting the United Kingdom parts of East Africa vital for the British to build a railway to Lake Victoria

3. Granting Germany freedom to control and acquire the coast of Dar es Salaam.

4. Granting Germany control over the Wituland Protectorate.
