3 Jan 1834 Jahr - William Horner - Zoetrope
Beschreibung:
Horner is most famous for his invention of the Zoetrope, an improved version of Joseph Plateau’s Phenakistoscope that he invented in 1834. William originally named the device ‘Daedalum’ meaning wheel of the devil. Horner had created the invention so that he could use it to teach his students since the machine could be used without a viewing mirror and could be viewed by more than one person at a time, unlike Plateau’s Phenakistoscope Unfortunately, Horner’s invention became forgotten until the late 1860’s when it was patented by a British man, M Bradley and American, William Lincoln in 1867. Lincoln renamed the device when he patented it, calling it the Zoetrope meaning wheel of life, a much more lighthearted name than that given to it by Horner.
The Zoetrope uses the persistence of motion to create the illusion of movement; the zoetrope consists of a drum with an open top which is then spun on a central axis. A sequence of images, usually hand drawn pictures are then placed around the inside of the drum, above the images are equally spaced slots cut into the drum, as the drum spins these slots blur out so that what is seen is the illusion that the images inside the drum are moving. The faster the drum is then spun the smoother the movement of the images appears and due to the design of the machine with slots all around the drum, a person can look from any side and still be able to view the movement of the images, therefore making it suitable for use by groups of people.
Due to the zoetrope being forgotten about or disregarded for 33 years, the invention never gained much publicity or interest and since Emile Reynaud invented the Praxinoscope 10 years later that was far more capable of long detailed animations, the Zoetrope was barely used. Therefore the invention never contributed much to the development of animation even though it was an improvement on the previous Phenakistoscope by Plateau
