The Grand Rapids City Commissioners approved the request to allow the city engineer to apply for the permits that are needed to start the project. This is going to help cut time on the restriction or "red tape" that has been in the way of the project for so long. The work would be done in phases, they have to first create adjustable barriers to contorl the rivers flow around a mile upstream from the downtown core which allows for the removal of the 6th street dam. When that was done they would then begin to bring in the stone and rock to create the rapids. They estimate those improvements would be wrapping up in late 2018 or sometime in 2019.
