After Mossadeq's nationalisation of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, Britain encouraged the US to back them in a coup to overthrow Mossadeq and reinstate the Iranian Shah's rule. This was also to prevent the spread of Communism to the Middle East as Iran shares a long border with the USSR and the Middle East and Mossadeq was sympathetic to the USSR.
