Following the occupation of the Kingdom of Hawaii by George Paulet, the United Kingdom establishes a protectorate over the islands in an attempt to 1. curb US expansion in the Pacific, and 2. have a better negotiating platform for the ongoing Oregon dispute.

However, following the end of the occupation era in 1848, the Hawai'i Protectorate became less and less internally influenced by the United Kingdom until the Hawai'i Crisis and subsequent Treaty of Honolulu in 1894.
