WW1 had claimed an estimated 16 million lives, while the influenza epidemic killed an estimated 50 million lives. One fifth of the world’s population was infected by the deadly disease. The virus lasted from spring of 1918 to summer 1919. The flu afflicted over 25 percent of the U.S population. In one year the average life expectancy in the USA dropped by 12 years.
