Another important aspect of Trudeau's foreign policy included the Canadian government's official recognition of Communist China in 1970, and visit to China on October 13, 1973. Trudeau realized China was a growing world power, and was a key trade partner. The recognition benefited Canadian trade, and gave Canada more independence in policy -- it defied US policy.
