1 Jan 597 Jahr - St Augustine arrives in Britain

Beschreibung:

St Augustine arrived in England to begin to teach the Britain's the Christian faith. Of course, the religion was practiced in Latin, and the Britain's only spoke their Old English.
Latin words which were learnt during religious conversion began to make their way into the daily lives of the people of England. Ecclesiastical learning was introduced, and scholars were educated in the Latin language. Contribution of words from the Latin lexicology to the English began around this time (including: angel - Middle English, angelus - Latin).
The Latin alphabet was also introduced and of around 30,000 words from the original Old English lexicon, only 15% have survived. Some of these words include: man, wife, child, house, eat, meat, sleep, fight, live, drink, father, sister, brother, numbers; such as 1-10.
Some basic syntax from the language also remains.
Parts of the Norse and Celtic languages remained.
