Also known as the European Recovery Program, was a U.S. program that provided aid, on a per capita basis, to Western Europe for the devastation from the aftermath of World War II. It was enacted in 1948 and provided more than $15 billion for rebuilding efforts on the continent. It was formulated as a four-year plan to reconstruct cities, industries and infrastructure and to remove trade barriers between European neighbors. In addition to economic development, one of the goals of the plan was to halt the communist expansion. The plan provided aid to 16 different European nations.
