14 Mai 1872 Jahr - Annexation of California
Beschreibung:
Following the Mexican-American War, many in the United States were hesitant to annex the region that would become the Republic of California as it would be admitted as a slave state, giving the slave states even more power. As a result, in the Peace of Belize, the Southern portion of Alta California remained Mexican and the northern portion became the Sierra Nevada Territory [and later state of Shasta]. The later Treaty of Ciudad de México saw the creation of the California Republic.
However, the citizens of the Republic were pro-annexation and desired to unite with the United States. A feeling which only increased with the mass immigration of white settlers after the Treaty of Ciudad de México; which made the region safe to settle in the later stages of the Californian Gold Rush.
After the Bloody American Civil War, the mood towards Californian annexation improved and following a vote in congress in 1872, the United States annexed the Republic of California as the state of Southern California.
