Realising the war is lost, Lincoln sent a delegation to Paris at the demands of the British and French in order to settle the war. The New York Fiasco was what finally put the nail in the coffin, as the governor declared that secession for New England may soon become a reality. Hoping to keep the Union together, Lincoln capitulated to status-quo ante demands.
