The first Nisga’a Land Committee was formed in 1890, though it could not pursue legal action against the Canadian government until the 1960's, due to the various laws put in place against Aboriginals. True negotiations began in 1976, a few years after the Supreme Court of Canada had created Canada's land claims negotiation policy. The BC government joined the discussion of Nisga’a land claims in 1990. A treaty was composed, receiving royal assent on May 11, 2000, giving the Nisga’a freedom to their own open and democratic government. This was the first modern Aboriginal land negotiation to be held in BC, and leaves the possibility for future negotiations open. This was a very positive step towards peaceful relations between Aboriginals and the Canadian government.
