26 Aug 1977 Jahr - Bill 101

Beschreibung:

Rene Levesque advocated for Quebec’s recognition as a unique society. As premier, he passed Bill 101, the "Charter of the French language", on August 21, 1977. This made French the sole official language of Quebec, which meant all government employees in Quebec had to work in French, all outdoor signs must be written in only French, and children of immigrants must attend French-speaking schools. Separatists supported this Bill, as they did not want bilingualism, they wanted to promote only French culture and language. Even many non-separatists were in support, as they felt the French culture was threatened by a widespread English culture. From the outside, however, English-Canadians saw this as oppression, and believe the changes being provoked in Quebec were too extreme. This made Anglophone-Francophone relations somewhat more tense.
