1 Jun 1969 Jahr - White Paper
Beschreibung:
Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's government issued the White Paper in June, 1969, to try to ameliorate the Canadian government’s relationship with the Aboriginal peoples of Canada. It repealed the Indian Act, closed the Department of Indian Affairs, gave Aboriginals economic support and ownership of their own land, and gave provincial governments equal responsibility over Aboriginals as they did other citizens. However, The White Paper also pushed Aboriginals to assimilate into Canadian society by encouraging them to leave reserves and take up jobs in cities. This was met with a lot of backlash, as it was seen by some as another attempt at cultural genocide.
