This policy created math and English curriculum standards for levels kindergarten through 12th grade. They focus on literacy and college readiness.

Since its adoption, there has been public outcry and even demonstrations opposing it. Those who support it argue that it creates consistent standards and more rigorous curriculum.

Critiques argue that that teachers must spend too much class time taking practice tests and that they are too restricted by what they can teach in the classroom. Others question the level of government involvement. It is important to note that states decide whether or not to implement it - it is not required.
