Following Gabriel's injury, Milena worries for the future of the Upyr Crown. She proposes a political marriage to secure Gabriel's reign. Gabriel, weak from blood loss and poison, accepts the marriage document--but does not see Milena's true intention.

Within the document Milena has concealed her coup d'etat: naming her the sole Bone Queen on the Hollow Throne. Gabriel Albescu is demoted to Duke of Ash.
