Beschreibung:

No doubt hand-operated originally and used in smithies across the county: often described as a ‘pair’. They are commonly listed in wills and inventories: 1402 unum par de melioribus bellows, York (SS4/250); 1553 a paire bellows, a Stythie, hamers and tonges, Sheffield (TWH16/82). The spellings could vary: 1543 twho paire of bellyces, Ripley (SS26/43); 1558 a payre of ballys of vs price, Darnall (TWH16/116). In 1698 Joseph Brammall, filesmith, had three pairs of bellows and their furniture, £7.10s.0d, and in 1734 John Fearnally, trumpmaker, had One Double Belley (IH). They were traditionally made of leather: 1509 Pro ij hides to the smyth bellows and for dightynge of thame, 8s, York (SS35/95). In 1724 Bullhides and Cowhides were purchased for the new finery Bellows at Colnebridge (SpSt).
