The creation of the Progressive movement is an incredibly significant event from the past century. It began as a social movement, then turned into a political movement most widely associated with Theodore Roosevelt. From progressive ideology stemmed the Square Deal--a program designed to conserve natural resources, control corporations, and protect consumers. It essentially protected workers from mistreatment and ended child slavery and unsafe work conditions in the United States. Roosevelt’s use of progressivism in politics widely boosted his overall rating and assisted in stimulating the economy, as workers were better treated and more willing to work. This is significant in today’s society because it brought upon the idea that employees deserve a safe environment, fair treatment, and have the right to speak out against mistreatment.
