The first most significant event from the past century was the New Deal. To summarize, Franklin D. Roosevelt created 47 government programs and utilized Keynesian theory in order to pull the economy out of the Depression. The economy grew by over thirty percent, and his plan helps smooth out the jagged edges of the business cycle. The biggest part of the New Deal, though, was the significance of the social programs that were created, the most major ones being Social Security--which provides a guaranteed income, retirement benefits, and disability benefits--, the introduction of a minimum wage, the Securities and Exchange Commission--which regulates stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, while also providing educational resources on finances--and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, which insures savings, checking, and other deposit accounts up to $250,000. Though the New Deal was only in effect for a decade, the results are still seen in today’s modern society.
