Causes:
-Gold was discovered in the Black Hills in 1874. Custer was sent to protect railroad workers from Indians but mined for gold instead.
-Thousands of miners settled in the Black Hills which was Indian land and so broke the Fort Laramie Treaty.
-The US government offered to buy the Black Hills, but the Indians refused and continued attacking settlers.
-The government then accused the Indians of breaking the treaty and relations broke down.
Events:
-Thousands of Sioux left their reservation to join Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. The government ordered them back onto reservations or they would be attacked.
-Custer was to meet 2 other generals to attack the Indians at the Little Bighorn. He arrived before the others, and was unaware of the number of Indians in the camp.
-The Indians killed all of Custer's troops and the US army suffered a momentous loss.
Consequences:
-Government use the battle to ignore any previous treaties.
-Indians were forced onto reservations with stricter rules.
